Dear First Pres,

I have exciting news to share with you. Our session has generously granted me the privilege of a three-month sabbatical leave. Many churches do not have sabbatical policies for their pastors, but First Pres adopted our current policy a handful of years ago. We allow pastors who have served six years, or if they're part-time have service adding up to six years, to request a sabbatical leave. I am in my 12th year on the pastoral staff, so I definitely meet the "time served" criteria.

Having a sabbatical policy in place is very important because ministry is deeply rewarding, exciting, and filled with opportunities for community. On the flip side, at times aspects of ministry can be tiring, confusing, and even have a negative impact on some of our relationships. A sabbatical gives pastors the time to stop, to step away for a season and clarify where we've been and where we're going. It is precious time set aside to listen to God's still, small voice so the pastor can continue to serve God well with renewed energy. I am so grateful for this opportunity, and for the congregation's generosity and kindness that a sabbatical represents.

My sabbatical will begin on September 10, and I will return to the office on December 10. During that time, I have the amazing opportunity to pursue activities and situations that will give rest to my soul and my body. That doesn't mean I'll be laying on the couch watching TV for three months! Brian and I have already made plans for a trip to Australia and New Zealand, piggy-backing on one of our daughter Kaylan's working trips so we can spend some time traveling with her. I have plans for special time with each of my grandsons, for hiking, reading, and spiritual retreat. All of these are activities and pursuits that will rest and stretch my body, mind, and soul.

Of course, being away from the office and the church for such a long time means a lot of preparation. I've already had numerous conversations with Jeremy and Ataloa about how my responsibilities and tasks will be taken care of while I'm gone. I know that our congregation's leaders, as well as the staff will be helping in various ways, and am grateful for their willing support. In addition to office preparations, I'm already in a process of personal preparation, praying and being prayed for by my family and a few close friends.

Would you join me in praying for the process of preparation? You'll be hearing more about this in the next couple of months, but I would certainly appreciate your prayers starting right now. One specific prayer request is that my sabbatical time would be used by the Lord to do all he wants to do with it, and in me. I can't say the following words too many times: I am so very grateful for the privilege of a sabbatical. Thank you, First Presbyterian, for your support, love and generosity.

Yours in Christ,

Lana Roberts
